Teen Center

Our Teen Center activities focus on technology – i.e. digital journalism- allowing students to develop writing skills, learn desktop publishing, and write a monthly parent update and quarterly newsletter. High school students also begin the process of exploring post-secondary education, career exploration, skill development such as music production, computer literacy, and academic enrichment.  Our program not only gives our students technological skills, but also increases self-confidence and pride, promotes social development with peers, and fosters increased social awareness.

A typical day may look like the following:

4:00 - 5:00 PM
Participants arrive and are provided with a nutritious snack. Students will then work on/complete homework and other school assignments. The program assistant and work-study student will provide individual assistance.

5:00 - 6:00 PM
Students enrolled in Digital Journalism may work on the layout for the upcoming parent newsletter. Students may take and digitally edit for photos for the issue and interview staff members for their perspective on issues affecting NCFC.

6:00 - 7:00 PM
Students enrolled in the web design class may practice their skills by uploading pictures from a recent NCFC event onto our website. Other students may be fine tuning design of a website for a local high school wishing to have a web presence.

7:00 - 8:00 PM
Students enrolled in the college preparatory class may work on the finishing touches to their personal essay for their college application. Some students may be be getting help in anticipation of their upcoming SAT/ACT test the following month.

Each day at the Teen Center is different. But the goal is to provide each student with the tools necessary to succeed in life.
